September 14, 2026: Mystery Solved

It is amazing what can be discovered via the internet.  I have posted on my Scottie Things page an etching whose signature I couldn’t make out.  Well, today, thanks to Kate, I got an answer.

The etching and signature is below:

In a wonderful, I could reasonably say the word classy, comes to mind.  In a letter neatly typed on high end paper, as Kate has a MFA in Printmaking, I learned about this etching.  Kate told me that:

the signature is Lionel.  The work was done by the artist and actor, Lionel Barrymore.  He had a favorite pair named Sally and Johnny and may be the subject of this etching.  The technique for this artwork is “chine colle”.  It is a rare type of print from many, many years ago.  Old chine colle prints are quite fragile and is printed on very delicate paper.  Kate thinks that Mr. Barrymore produced this edition as a private gift for friends and fellow Scottie fanciers with whom he had worked at the time, like Humphrey Bogart.  Kate also sent me a photo of Lionel and his two Scotties and a picture of Humphrey Bogart with his Scottie, Zero.  Kate also shared with me how to take care of this print by finding someone who works with archival, acid free materials.

This is very exciting to me that I now know that “Siond” is actually Lionel, with mystery solved.  And that I have a nice piece of artwork as such.

I am grateful that Kate took the time and care to send me this information via mail.  I am so thrilled.  So, if you check out this page, thank you, Kate!

I did research of my artwork and found another piece done by Lionel Barrymore.  It is 122 out of 300 and is pictured below:
